The GIS expert Consultant will collaborate closely with the Global Public Space Programme and the urban health team of UN-Habitat and local project teams, staff of other UN Agencies, Government officials, media, multilateral and bilateral donors and civil society.

Duties and Responsibilities

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the United Nations agency for Human Settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities to provide adequate shelter for all. The position is in the Planning, Finance & Economy Section of the Urban Practices Branch (UPB) with the Global Solutions Division in Nairobi. The Global Solutions Division (GSD) is responsible for providing programmatic direction for UN-Habitat and is responsible and accountable for the programmatic delivery of the Strategic Plan. The Division leads the tools and methodology production and the integration of the various substantive competencies towards the effective delivery of the Strategic Plan and the mandate of UN-Habitat. It provides substantive training to staff members and supports the capacity development of Member States and partners. The Urban Practices Branch (UPB) is the tools and methodology production and skills centre of UN-Habitat that develops normative guidance and cutting-edge tools through communities of urban practice. It provides technical and policy advice approaches and methodologies to MCOs/CO, government and partners and mainstreams them throughout the programme portfolio. It also ensures that the cross-cutting area of safety and the social inclusion issues of human rights; gender; children, youth and older persons; and disability are developed and mainstreamed across the Agency. Planning, finance and Economy Section (PFES) The Urban Practices Branch (UPB) is the tools and methodology production and skills centre of the UN-Habitat that develops normative guidance and cutting-edge tools through communities of urban practice. It provides technical and policy advice approaches and methodologies to MCOs/CO, government and partners and mainstreams them throughout the programme portfolio. It also ensures that the cross-cutting area of safety and the social inclusion issues of human rights; gender; children, youth and older persons; and disability are developed and mainstreamed across the Agency. The Planning, Finance & Economy Section coordinates the Agency’s substantive, normative and operational work on various dimensions of planning, finance and economy. The Planning, Finance & Economy Section aims to develop, document, pilot/test and disseminate planning policies, norms, standards, tools, methodologies, regulatory frameworks, operating procedures and practices at global, regional, national and sub-national levels. The consultant will support the Planning, Finance and Economy in three key areas of work: (A) the Young Gamechangers Initiative activities, (B) Data analysis and visualisation for urban health and public space and (C) city-wide assessments. Supervision The consultant will be part of, and work with the Planning, Finance and Economy Section located in the Urban Practices Branch of UN-Habitat, reporting to the Programme Management Officer – Young Gamechangers Initiative. Responsibilities The consultant will be responsible for the following tasks:

  •  Support the geo-analysis work under the Young Gamechangers Initiative Project
  •  Deliver Trainings of Trainers to implementing partners and country offices
  •  Engage in workshops and meetings eOoWYb2 B2NWzi
  •  Write technical and normative outputs, including the spatial strategy, situational analysis reports, public space design proposals, maps, plans, and guidelines for green areas and associated public spaces.
  •  Prepare maps, graphics and statistics through collection, compilation, spatialisation, analysis and interpretation of spatial data.
  •  Attend meetings and events promoted by UN-Habitat and partners to strengthen the Programme’s presence, including the UN-Habitat Assembly, amongst others.
  •  Be responsible for maintaining an organised and accessible information file.
  •  Participate in missions if requested.

Qualifications/special skills

Education: University degree in Geography, Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Urban Planning, Urban Studies or related subjects is required Experience At least four (4) years of experience working in urban planning and design with knowledge in geospatial analysis, mapping and cartography using GIS and CAD tools is required Knowledge of industry leading applications for urban analysis, such as ArcGIS, Auto CAD,QGIS, Earth Engine, Sketch-up and Adobe is desirable Other office software skills like Microsoft Office, PowerBI is an asset

Languages

Fluency in English is required. Experience in other languages, including French, Arabic, and Swahili, is an asset.
