Job Description
- The Farm Manager is dedicated to ensuring the efficient and sustainable cultivation of maize and soybeans by implementing advanced agronomic practices and providing leadership and technical support to farmers.
- This role aims to maximize crop yield and quality while fostering strong community relationships and enhancing the livelihoods of local farmers out grower farmers through effective resource management, financial oversight, and community development initiatives.
Roles and Responsibilities
Agronomic Practices:
- Develop and implement advanced agronomic practices tailored for maize and soybean cultivation.
- Design crop rotation and soil conservation strategies to maintain soil health and productivity.
- Integrate sustainable farming techniques to optimize resource use and reduce environmental impact.
Crop Monitoring and Management:
- Monitor crop growth and health through regular field inspections and data analysis.
- Manage soil fertility programs, including soil testing and nutrient management plans.
- Implement integrated pest management (IPM) and weed control strategies to protect crops from pests and diseases.
Technical Support and Guidance:
- Provide farmers with ongoing technical support and guidance to enhance crop yield and quality.
- Develop and distribute educational materials and resources on best farming practices.
- Organize workshops and training sessions on advanced farming techniques and technologies.
Field Operations:
- Conduct regular field visits to ensure adherence to best agricultural practices and address any issues.
- Coordinate field activities, including planting, irrigation, fertilization, and harvesting operations.
- Ensure the proper maintenance and operation of farm equipment and machinery.
Farmer and Stakeholder Relations:
- Establish and maintain strong relationships with contracted farmers, fostering a collaborative and supportive environment.
- Act as a liaison between farmers, local communities, government agencies, and agricultural organizations.
- Address and resolve any farmer concerns or issues promptly and effectively
Input and Resource Coordination:
- Coordinate the timely procurement and distribution of seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, and other necessary inputs to farmers.
- Ensure the efficient use and management of resources to maximize productivity and minimize waste.
Harvest and Post-Harvest Management:
- Oversee the harvesting process, ensuring timely and efficient collection of crops.
- Manage post-harvest activities, including drying, storage, and transportation logistics.
- Implement quality control measures to maintain the integrity and marketability of harvested crops.
Financial Management and Budgeting:
- Develop and manage operational budgets, ensuring cost-effective production practices.
- Analyze market trends, pricing, and financial metrics to optimize profitability.
- Prepare and present financial reports, forecasts, and performance analyses to senior management
Reporting and Documentation:
- Maintain detailed records of crop performance, field activities, and input usage.
- Prepare regular reports on crop health, yield forecasts, and project status.
- Document and share best practices and success stories with stakeholders.
Community and Development Initiatives:
- Foster strong relationships with local communities and support community development initiatives.
- Implement programs that enhance the livelihoods of local farmers, including education, health, and economic development projects.
- Collaborate with non-profit organizations, government agencies, and other partners to support community goals
Team Leadership and Development:
- Lead and mentor a team of agricultural officers, technicians, and support staff.
- Conduct performance evaluations and provide professional development opportunities for team members.
- Foster a positive and productive work environment, encouraging teamwork and innovation.
Training and Capacity Building:
- Conduct comprehensive training sessions for farmers and staff on advanced farming techniques, technology adoption, and sustainable practices.
- Develop training programs and materials that address the specific needs and challenges faced by local farmers
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Agronomy / Agriculture / Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred.
- 5 – 8 years of proven experience in farm management, particularly in maize and soybean cultivation.
- Strong knowledge of agronomic practices, soil fertility management, pest control, and weed management.
- Excellent leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and guide a diverse team.
- Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with farmers, local communities, government agencies, and other stakeholders
